Kristopher Negron Fills Bench

http://donatelifeohio.org/

The Reds have been playing with a short bench for the last two weeks but minor injuries to Brandon Phillips and Billy Hamilton forced the Reds to make a move this morning.

Infielder Kristopher Negron's contract was purchased from Louisville.  Negron had been on the Reds' 40-man roster but was assigned outright to Louisville last season.  Negron had a good spring as a non-roster invitee.

The Reds designated right-handed pitcher Brett Marshall for assignment to clear a spot for Negron.

Carlos Contreras, who was brought up to help the Reds' battered bullpen two weeks ago, is being optioned to Louisville.  He was recalled from Pensacola when the Reds' bullpen was under water and needed an extra pitcher.

"That will help support our bench," Bryan Price said. "He's played all over. Played SS last night, went 2-for-4. He's played all outfield positions, second, third, and short. He's everywhere in Spring Training. He had a really outstanding spring but started slow at Louisville, he's up to .265 or so. Has a little bit of power. Had a nice season".

Negron was reassigned to Louisville the day before Opening day. He hit .269 with the Bats in 75 games with three home runs and 25 RBI. Negron hit 15 doubled and three triples. He stole nine bases.

Contreras appeared in three games, pitching 4 1/3 innings. He allowed one run on one hit and three walks.

"I was very happy with what he brought to the table<" Price said. "He got the opportunity to come up from Double-A and gave us a look at what we have going forward. I don't think he was scared. He's got three quality pitches. It is good to know we have something to look forward to if we have any setbacks with our bullpen".
